Verna Jean De Boer (nee Kortenhoeven) entered eternal rest with Christ Jesus the Lord on November 23rd, 2021. Verna was born the youngest of four daughters to Harry and Virginia Kortenhoeven in Roseland, Illinois on September the 16th, 1951. Verna grew up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, she was a lifelong member of the Christian Reformed Church. Desiring to serve, she was first a candy striper, then an aid. Her first job was at Rest Haven Convalescent Home where she discovered the wisdom of the elderly. She received her Bachelor of Science and nurses training at Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colorado. She chose behavioral medicine as her scope of practice and went on to earn her Master of Art - Education from the University of Colorado, and her Clinical Specialist in Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health certification. Verna loved education and was proud of her children’s education pursuits. Verna saw her vocation in behavioral health as a ministry of prayer and encouragement, she worked for Franciscan Health for 30+ years and flourished as a nurse educator and lecturer at Pacific Lutheran School of Nursing. She was a trained vocalist with full range, holding a deep appreciation and love for the beauty of sacred worship. Verna married Jay De Boer in 1975, together they served the Lord and raised children of the covenant. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Virginia Kortenhoeven, sister Darlene Meyering, and brother in law, George Van Dahm. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jay De Boer, children, Rev. Aaron De Boer, Rebecca (Travis Ball) De Boer, and Andrew De Boer, foster son, Cody O’Shea, granddaughters LucyElla, Mabel and Rosemary, sisters Virginia (Denver) Johnson, Mary Van Dahm, brothers in law, Robert Meyering and Wilmer (Linda) De Boer, and sister in law, Helene (Les) Van Grootheest-Geyer, and beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Service of Celebration will be held on Dec 11, 2021, 1:00pm, Tacoma Christian Reformed Community Church, 2419 E 72nd St, Tacoma, WA. 98404
