Cho Ssang Kyu, born on July 2, 1940 in Geumsan, South Korea, passed away unexpectedly on October 4, 2024 at Madigan Army Medical Center. She was affectionately known as "Jo" by family and friends. She is survived by her devoted husband, Edward Barnes, and their cherished son, David Barnes.
Her memory is also honored by her elder brothers, Cho Seong Kyu and Cho Choong Kyu; her sister Cho Yeon Kyu; and their respected families; along with the families other five other late siblings. Among them, her nieces, Cho Minsook, Cho Mira, Cho Me Jung, Cho Jungsook, Cho Unha, and Cho Unsuk; and her nephew, Joe Woosung, who are the beloved children of her late brother, Cho Song Hyu and his wife Cho Um Chon.
Jo met Ed in the autumn of 1966 and they united in marriage two years later on November 6, 1968 at the US Embassy in Seoul, South Korea. She journeyed with her husband to the United States in December 1969. In 1971, during her time in Lawton, Oklahoma, she received her first driver's license; and on February 22, 1973, she proudly became a naturalized US Citizen. In 1986, Jo, Edward, and their son David, settled into their home in Tacoma, Washington, where she resided for the remainder of her life.
Throughout her life, Jo had a deep affection for dogs. Together with her husband Ed, they lovingly raised 14 dogs over their 56 year marriage. Gardening was among her favorite pastimes, and she took great joy in managing her garden, cultivating a variety of vegetables and flowers over the years.
"Jo" Ssang Kyu Barnes was dearly loved and will be profoundly missed by her family, who will cherish her memory for the rest of their lives. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society in her honor. You can donate directly for Jo here:
Remembrances for Jo
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
