Rodney Lee Patterson was born on February 9, 1939, in Worland, Wyoming, to Frank Patterson and Martha Rebideau Patterson. The family lived in a cabin on their homestead near Tensleep, Wyoming, until 1941, when they relocated to the San Joaquin Valley in California. In 1949, they settled in Ellensburg, Washington, where Rod graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1957. That September, Rod began his long career at Boeing and moved to the Seattle area. In 1958, he took leave from Boeing to serve two years of active duty in the U.S. Navy, returning afterward to
complete Boeing’s machinist apprenticeship program. He worked as a machinist until his retirement in 1999.
Rod married Kathy Diemert in 1961, and they had two sons, Mark and Scott. They divorced in 1970. In 1974, Rod married Marilyn Maxwell, they moved to Sumner, Washington, and Rod adopted Marilyn’s son Edward. In 1976, they welcomed their son David. The family moved to their home outside of Puyallup in 1985, where Rod lived for the rest of his life. Rod and Marilyn divorced in 1987.
