Patricia Ann (Schultz) Berg

Patricia Ann Schultz was born on December 16, 1930 in Glenwood Township, Minnesota to Bethel Anne (Peart) and Alvin Franklin "Bill" Schultz. Her sister Joan joined the family when Patty was two with little brother William "Little Bill" arriving about a decade later. Her father "Big Bill" was employed in the Works Projects Administration (WPA) as part of the American New Deal necessitating frequent relocations throughout the midwest for the family during Patricia's childhood. The family moved to Washington State when Pat was a teenager, making their home in Yakima. In high school Pat was recruited by the local radio station to report the news for the "teen beat". It was at Yakima (Davis) Senior High School where she met Edward Berg who would later become her husband and lifelong partner. Pat and Ed had six children between 1948 and 1958: Thomas Berg (Doni); Richard Berg (deceased in infancy); Sharon Griffin (Robert); Randall Berg (Ann); Christine DeLaney; and Kathleen Myron (Steven). Pat became a young grandma with the birth of her first grandchild in 1969, followed by many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren over the years. Pat was a hard-working and industrious homemaker keeping a clean and orderly home for her large family; she could stretch a dollar better than most, sewing many of the children's clothes and cooking all of the meals seven days a week. She regularly participated in community and civic activities including the local PTA, working at the polls during elections, and campaigning for the "March of Dimes". As an active member of Yakima's "Women's Century Club", Pat helped to organize and became the first president of the organization's offshoot "Young Women's Century Club". After focusing on child rearing and homemaking throughout most of the 1950's and 1960's, Pat's energies shifted to the new business Ed and she had started in Tacoma in 1969. While Ed focused on the vision and building of the business, Pat focused on the financial side, starting with basic accounting courses at the local community college. Since its early days, Berg Equipment and Scaffolding Co. has expanded to two locations, employs 67 people, and is coming up on its 50th year in business in 2019. Pat had many interests including traveling, collecting, carnival glass, and was a "tried and true" Seattle Mariners fan. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Pat was technically savvy using her smartphone and iPad to surf the web, shop online, or post on Facebook well into her eighties. She and Ed enjoyed their many travels for business and leisure over the years visiting much of the United States, Canada, and Mexico; though her favorite was Hawaii often visiting during the winter holiday season. They also enjoyed residing part of the year in Las Vegas and Ocean Shores where Pat enjoyed hunting for agates on the beach. Pat's lifelong partner, Ed, passed away after 65 years of marriage in 2014. She adored their beloved dachshund Twinkle who kept her entertained and was a good little companion right up until her recent passing. In addition to children and grandchildren, Pat is survived by sister-in-law Marlene Hill and many nieces and nephews and their families. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018 at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup, WA, with a reception following. The burial is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. that afternoon at Mountain View Cemetery in Auburn, WA. Arrangements by Powers Funeral Home.
