Nancy (Miles) Haughee

January 27, 1947 — July 23, 2019

Nancy Kathleen (Miles) Haughee, age 72, of Puyallup, Washington, entered her eternal rest on July 23, 2019. She passed peacefully after a prolonged and valiant fight against Alzheimer's disease. While the disease stole her memory and intellect, it could not quench her spirit and her love, which remained strong until the end. Nancy was born in Seattle, Washington, on January 27, 1947 to Curtis and Maebyn Miles. She graduated from Kent Meridian High School and later attended Pacific Lutheran University, where she graduated with a nursing degree in 1969. Nancy met her future husband and life-long friend Rick Haughee in their High School French club. Later, after a gathering at a friend's house, he offered to drive her home on his Vespa. They were married on December 21, 1968 in Kent, Washington. Nancy loved nursing, advocacy and teaching, both in health care settings such as Good Samaritan Hospital, and as a parish nurse for Pilgrim Lutheran Church of Puyallup, Washington. She raised a son with Muscular Dystrophy in the days before the Americans with Disability Act, and she did her fair share of educating and championing those with special needs. She ministered to countless shut-ins, infirmed, and those on the margins of the faith community due to mental health issues or poor health. Nancy advocated for the place of parish nursing in the Lutheran Church, speaking to Synod gatherings and churches throughout Washington. Nancy was preceded in death by her son Eric in 1992 and her husband, Rick, in 2015. She is survived by her sister Shirley Watanabe (Daryl), of Kent, Washington; son Chris Haughee of Helena, Montana, daughter Amanda (Haughee) McKee of Puyallup, their spouses Kim and Kurt, and six grandchildren-Aidan, Annabelle, Elias, Elena, Lily, and Michael. She was always so proud of her children and their passion and love for Jesus and willingness to serve others in his name. Nancy leaves behind a rich legacy of faith and selflessness that continues to bear fruit in the hearts, minds and souls of those privileged enough to know her. Her life verse was James 1:22, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." She exemplified faithful obedience to love God and others through selfless acts of kindness and compassion. A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Puyallup, Washington, on Friday August 9th at 3:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the Alzheimer's Association or the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Arrangements by Powers Funeral Home.
