Former longtime Puyallup and Redmond resident Mary "Jane" Hammersmith (Berggren) passed away June 22nd, 2018 in Redmond. She was 88. Born January 2nd, 1930 in Puyallup, Mary spent her early years at the family farm on 112th Street E near Woodland Avenue. She was a member of Lincoln High School's Class of '48 and attended Bellevue Community College. She married Stanley George Hammersmith, also of Puyallup, and worked for Western Electric and Boeing for 23 years from which she retired in 1992. Mary had an extremely green thumb and loved working in the garden with Stan. She enjoyed watching gardening shows, Martha Stewart and classic television sitcoms with her family. Even though she held a full-time career, Mary devoted most of her early parenting years taking her daughters to music lessons, horseback riding and Girl Scout trips and watching sports, playing catch and chauffeuring her son to collect autographs of his sports heroes. Survivors include her daughters Susan Elizabeth (Freden) of Manson, and Catherine Ann of Kirkland, and son John Robert of Kirkland. Her sister Leona Baker of Tacoma Washington also survives her. Her husband Stanley, daughter Mary Lou, older brother Nels and older sisters Marie, Lou, Betty, and Edith preceded her in death. Mary will be laid to rest at a later date at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations in her memory be made to the Arboretum Foundation. Arrangements by Powers Funeral Home.
