Arrangements by Powers Funeral Home. John Steinley, 91, died peacefully at home on August 7, 2018 with family by his side. He was born January 20, 1927 on a Farm, two miles from Dahlen, North Dakota. He was the eldest of five children of Oliver and Olga Steinley. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage. Growing up on multiple farms during the depression, gave him a lifelong love of the land and animals. He said his family was very poor but he never went to bed hungry. In January 1946 he left home on his 19th birthday, to be inducted into the Army. While in Colorado Springs, he met Philliss Cole in September 1946. They were married May 17th 1947, a marriage that lasted almost 70 years. After two tours in Germany, he was honorably discharged from the Army as a 1st Sgt. He was proud all his life of his country and his service. Returning to stateside, the family moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming. He began his 35 year career with Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. pumping gas and ending his career as a Coast Division Operating Manager. John and Phil moved to Puyallup, WA. In 1998. They joined Shepard of the Hill Presbyterian Church. He was very active in his church life, enjoying bible study group, men's fellowship, working with the landscaping committee and enjoying Sunday services for nearly 20 years. His love of the Lord was his guiding light in all that he did. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Philliss, his parents and sister Alna Swenseid. He is survived by children Marilane Kolovos (George) Peg Schmidt (Dale) Rebecca Steinley Smart and Thomas Steinley (Shay), five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also sisters June Ellingson (Park River, N.D.) Lorna Jensen (Keizer,Or.) and brother Oscar Steinley ( Dalton Gardens, ID.) Military Funeral Honors will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery on Friday September 7th, 2018 at 11:00am. Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday September 8th at 1:00pm at Shepard of the Hill Presbyterian Church 8401 112th St. E Puyallup, WA. 98373. Reception to follow.
