Recollections from the Life of
Ilene Whitman Nov. 11, 1924 - Nov. 25, 2023
In Ilene's 99 years of life, she was fulfilled by the many roles that created the tapestry that was her life:
She was a lover of the outdoors, a feeling gained by playing in the woods with her younger brother Jim (Miller} as children growing up in Ashford, WA.
A newspaper deliverer, sharing the responsibility for a paper route with her
brother Jim in rural Ashford.
A n employee working at the Ashford store (which is still there).
A friend to many who chose her as May Queen at Eatonville HS in 1943, the year she graduated. (Her future husband was the May King!}
A n adventurer traveling alone across the country by train to join and marry the love of her life, Lawrence (Swede) Whitman, who was in pilot training in Texas.
A mother who raised three children in Puyallup: Nancy Dahl, Jim Whitman, and Ann Dungey, who survive her.
A wife who was supported by and support to her husband for 50+ years until his death in 1999.
A grandmother of 7 who range in age from 50 to 23: Erik Dahl, Karen Dahl Duvall, Alison Ballard Jaquez, Jamie Whitman, Trevor Whitman, Kayla Dungey, and Nick Whitman.
A dedicated participant in Bible Study Fellowship which shaped and deepened her Christian faith.
A caring community member, Ilene worked with other Christian women in Puyallup to found the Puyallup Food Bank, where she volunteered for many years serving the less fortunate in the Puyallup area.
Her children, grandchildren and great -grandchildren will gather at the Sumner Cemetery at 11 am, Saturday, December 9, 2023. We invite those who knew and
loved Ilene to join us there in remembering her.
