He had many stories about that time in his life.

He learned the customs and some of the language and met a lifelong friend Rudy, whom he has always stayed in contact with. Also while in Germany, Don met his former wife June. Upon arrival back to the United States, the couple were married in Sumner, WA. At Don’s church, Sumner First Christian.

Don was honorably discharged from the Army at the rank of 1st. Lieutenant. Don went to work for the Boeing Company as a Methods Analyst until the big layoff.

On March 1, 1971 Don began his Law Enforcement career as a Police Officer for the Bonney lake Police Department.

While working full time, Don continued his education. He earned his Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement in 1972 from Green River Community College. In 1976, with his Major being law and Justice, Don received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Central Washington State College.

During his tenure at the Police Department, Don was promoted to Lieutenant and then in September of 1978 he became the Chief of Police. A job that he held until his retirement in 2001.

Don came out of retirement in 2003 to become the Bonney Lake Police Community Service Officer until 2014.

Never one to sit still, in addition to his full time position at the Police Department, Don worked in uniform at the Puyallup Fair’s Green gate for well over 25 years.

He was also very active with the Bonney Lake Community and various Law Enforcement organizations.

He belonged to the Bonney Lake Chamber of Commerce, Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society and Beautify Bonney Lake. Don was on the Alderton/McMillan class reunion committee. To support their organizations, Don was a member of the VFW and Buckley Eagles for a time.

In law Enforcement, he was a member of the Pierce County Police Chiefs Association, WASPC (Washington Association of Sheriff’s and Police Chiefs).

Don was very involved with the Sumner First Christian Church. He and his parents, along with his brother Jack and sister Reka, joined the congregation when he was 6 years old. He held many positions within the church over the years, and he was still a member at the time of his death. Don loved and cared very much for his Church Family.

When Don was not busy with his professional and volunteer duties, he enjoyed watching the Mariners and Seahawks, a good cigar with a beer, spending time at their property on the Cowlitz River and driving his Porsche to Cannon Beach.
