Alice Marie Christy

April 9, 1927 — July 13, 2023

Rest in peace and eternal paradise our wonderful Mother, Grandma, GG, GGG, Auntie, and friend.

Alice passed away July 13, 2023, in Tacoma, Washington. She was born April 9, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois. Proceeded in death by her husband, Jack L. Christy, Sr., her son, Leland Christy, her mother, Dorothea VanWieringen, her sister LaVerne Beardemphl and her brothers, Charles Williams, Levi Babcock, and Aaron Babcock.

She is survived by her daughters, Berna Lee Novak, Anita Schaffer, son Jack Christy, Jr., grandsons, Michael Novak (Paula) and Robbie Schaffer (Brandi), great grandchildren, Eric Novak (Brittany), Cerah Schaffer, Morgan Schaffer (Gavin), and Hannah Schaffer, great-great granddaughter Eleanor Schaffer, many nieces and nephews, and her very good friends Kelly and Ingrid and Eilene.

A loving mother, grandmother (GG), great-grandmother (GGG) and friend to many has closed her eyes on earth but opened them in heaven. She loved to travel. Alice was always ready for her next trip. Trips to Canada, her annual trips to Michigan, and trips to Arizona kept her planning for weeks but she was always ready for the next road trip. Her most talked about trip was the one she took to Hawaii with her husband Jack and favorite relatives Betty and Don. Alice had a sweet clear voice and performed in operettas in her younger years. She enjoyed classical music, operas, and many hymns. She loved to read and could usually be found with at least one book open as her latest favorite. Cooking was not her favorite, but she will always be remembered for her famous baked beans. No matter the occasion, if there was food to be brought, her baked beans were requested. She loved to eat out and was known as the lady who put gravy on her salad. Others in the party would look at her askance until they tried it. She was a strong member of the Independent Order of Foresters where she held many offices. Her most cherished honor was being named Mother of the Year. Alice was always first to volunteer to pack the backpacks for the school children. Helping the community was important to the IOF and she loved doing her part. The summer picnic was always a must on her calendar. She enjoyed watching the kids play all the games and would advocate for at least one game for each age group.... even the youngest. She was always looking for hats, gloves, scarves and balnkets to donate to the homeless. She loved to be able to give them to the individual. Receiving the gift of a smile made her day. She was a valued volunteer for the Dog Tags for Kids Project that supports our troops.

Alice will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by the family she was so proud of.

Since Alice supported our troops and their families, the family is asking that memorials be made to Darkhorse Lodge.  Darkhorse Lodge is a retreat for combat veterans from all branches of service to come to relax, fish on Kentucky Lake, enjoy area activities and communicate with others who have walked in their boots. All at no cost to their guests.
